“Today’s Special” is a rom-com about a Manhattan sous chef forced to take over his family’s faltering restaurant in Jackson Heights.

Aasif Mandvi, co-writer, producer and hero of the movie ‘Today’s Special’, has made a remarkable journey in his career.

Mandvi was born in Mumbai, India, and his family moved to Bradford, England, when he was just a year old. He immigrated with his family to Florida, USA, when he was 16. After studying theatre at the University of South Florida, Mandvi worked as a performer at Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World Resort.

Later he began appearing in off-Broadway productions. He won an Obie Award for his critically acclaimed one-man show Sakina’s Restaurant.

Aasif Mandvi has a string of television shows he has appeared in – ER, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, CSI, Oz, Ed, The Bedford Diaries, Jericho, Sleeper Cell – to name a few.

In 2006, Mandvi auditioned for The Daily Show. He was hired immediately and appeared on the show the same day.

Mandvi also takes credit as the reader for the books on audio editions of Salman Rushdie’s Shalimar the Clown and V. S. Naipaul’s Magic Seeds. He has also played minor roles in many films.

Coming back to ‘Today’s Special’, Mandvi co-wrote the script of the movie with The Daily Show ex-writer Jonathan Bines and has acted in it as the hero and has produced the movie too!!!!!!!!!!

‘Today’s Special’ as mentioned earlier is a delightful and mouthwatering comedy. Samir is a sous chef who dreams of becoming the head chef at an upscale Manhattan restaurant. When he is passed over for a promotion he impulsively quits and lets his co-worker Carrie know that he intends to go to Paris and apprentice under a master French chef.

As luck would have it, his father has a heart attack and Samir is forced to take over Tandoori Palace, the nearly bankrupt family restaurant in Jackson Heights.

Run-down and with a oddball staff who are going through the motions, the Tandoori Palace is about to be replaced by a chain eatery. It is now that Samir hires a charismatic cab driver, Akbar, played to perfection by Naseeruddin Shah, as a replacement chef, and this awakens Samir’s own interest in his culinary heritage.

Things get increasingly out of control, Samir unexpectedly crashes into Carrie while doubling up as the delivery boy. The movie rolls on – Samir has a chance to rediscover his heritage and his passion for life through the enchanting art of cooking Indian food.

‘Today’s Special’ directed by David Kaplan runs for 99 minutes, entertaining and pleasing to all.

Madhur Jaffrey as Samir’s mother, Naseeruddin Shah as the charismatic cab driver and Jess Weixler as the former colleague lend excellent support to Mandvi.

This feel-good movie has it all – love, comedy and mouthwatering Indian spread! Taste it, you’ll like it.

Bobby Deol’s next film, Yamla Pagla Deewana is all set to release. Both brothers Sunny and Bobby star in this film with their dad Dharmendra. Apne, the 2007 film, directed by Anil Sharma, was the last movie in which they starred together. This film (YPD) is a full-on comedy film and Bobby feels that the one and a half years spent in completing the film were worth it because a comedy film cannot survive a bad script and they paid special attention to that.

Bobby is working on an Abbas-Mustan film, and he claims that they are his favorite director duo and he is having a great time working with them. This film is titled Players and is a re-make of the 2003 film The Italian Job. He will also be working with Abhishek Bachchan, who is a good friend and they knew each other before both of them started acting. So is he inspired enough by his buddy to play a gay character? Well, no it doesn’t seem like it. Bobby feels his built is too masculine and the audience won’t be convinced. He says that as an actor he is open to experimentation but a gay role isn’t one that he feels he can play with aplomb.

So, how is Bobby on the sets? He is far from being a prankster and instead he is the one who is the poor victim of pranks played upon him. But he is keen on honing his skills so that one day he is able to play pranks on others! Bobby, unlike his older brother Sunny Deol, is not particularly interested in film direction, they already produce films and that will continue, but he is sure that at present, directing a film is not his cup of tea.

Katrina Kaif is certainly the hot flavor of the season. This gal has temperatures soaring in the upcoming winter months with her latest fabulous flat abs and her lean look in the hot number ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ from the forth coming Farah Khan flick Tees Maar Khan.

Just after the music launch of the film on a running train, director Farah Khan had an amazing beach party for the cast and crew of the flick where the two top stars of the movieTees Maar Khan – Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar were happily gyrating to the number which has the nation going crazy – ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’. Katrina looked amazingly hot in a golden top and a wine red skirt which beautifully highlighted her thin and slim hips to fall gracefully to her toes.

The party was held in the popular Juhu beach in the city of Mumbai, which is the ultimate city of dreams and the land of films and film stars.

Katrina Kaif has indeed traversed the path to success with Akshay Kumar being one of the major factors in helping her to get there, of course along with the hunk Salman Khan, who has been a constant source of inspiration and strength for Kat ever since she had her foot set in right after her entry into B-town.

The Ranbir Kapoor – Deepika Padukone love story does not seem to reach its end anytime soon in the future. Leggy lass Deepika may have vented her anger sitting on Karan Johar’s couch and subsequently changed relationships among many within the Bollywood fraternity, but Ranbir Kapoor is unfazed. And if his attitude towards Deepika Padukone is anything to go by, the Kapoor lad is also in the mood of reconciliation!

Though this may sound unbelievable, Ranbir Kapoor was reportedly spotted in front of Deepika Padukone’s building on several occasions following the popular ‘Koffee With Karan’ spat. Reports in the media claim that Ranbir Kapoor was photographed in front of the Cozy Home Apartments building where Deepika Padukone puts up in Mumbai in the late hours of the night. According to these reports, Ranbir Kapoor could be seen repeatedly calling up Deepika Padukone and urging the security guard of the building to allow him to enter his ex girlfriend’s home. However, the guard on duty could not do so because according to a rule of the Cozy Home Apartments, anybody is not allowed to enter without the permission from the owners!

So did Ranbir Kapoor move away a loser? Not at all, in true filmy style, the Kapoor boy stood adamant in front of Deepika Padukone’s house constantly ringing her to receive access. A source who was present in the area when the incident took place at around 12.45 am in the night has said in a statement to the media that he overheard Ranbir Kapoor pleading to Deepika Padukone to let him enter her home so that he may be able to explain his situation. Well, we are not really sure what he had to explain considering that he has already spoilt his image by admitting that he really cheated on former girlfriend Deepika during his chat on ‘Koffee With Karan’.

Last heard, Deepika Padukone did let him enter when he refused to stop creating a fuss but not after more than half an hour of public drama. Did they kiss and make up inside? Watch this space for more!

Kiran Rao is promoting her maiden directorial venture Dhobi Ghat by writing postcards. In her latest postcard, she mentions her journey in the city of Mumbai and how it inspired her to make DHOBI GHAT.

She writes, ‘I came to Mumbai 12 years ago, moved house 7 times, worked on 8 films, found love, and am seeing my dreams come true. I guess it’s the magic of Mumbai – my muse, my home, and the reason I made this film called ‘Dhobi Ghat’…

It’s a film about four people and the city of Mumbai – four ordinary yet special people, whose lives intersect and become forever altered as they journey through longing, loneliness, loss and love…

And in many ways it’s as much as film about me, the people I’ve met, and the life I’ve lived in this crazy city!

To Mumbai!’

Sonam Kapoor is all set to say ‘Thank You’ to Anees Bazmee after her offered her a role in his next movie opposite Akshay Kumar. Anees had earlier cast Katrina Kaif in the movie but she pulled out of it after an initial not. Anees then approached Sonam’s father Anil Kapoor for her date and Sonam has been roped in. Anees has worked with Anil in No Entry and No Problem and says Anil and Sonam are like family to him.

There were rumours that Katrina Kaif wasn’t too interested in Farah Khan and her hubby Shirish Kunder’s Tees Maar Khan either and Sonam was approached for that role too. Farah however could not convince Sonam for the role and Katrina was finalised for the movie. Incidentally even Tees Maar Khan has Akshay Kumar playing the lead. Sonam has impressed many with Bollywood with her performance in the movie Delhi 6.
